I've been wanting to blog about this for a bit, but haven't took the time to sit down and type it. This is probably therapy for me, but way boring for you. So try to read till the end, I promise it's not just sadness... it gets better, there is a point to all this rambling. And my DH says that my blog is too funny for him, hmmm... he may rethink that after this post. ;)
The month of January for the past few years has been a real down-in-the-dumps kinda month for me so I usually try to keep myself busy so I don't have time to sit and sulk about it. January 21st is my dads birthday, he died in 1996 after a car/train collision. I was 19 years old. My parents divorced when I was 3 and I really didn't get to really hang out with him a lot until I was 16 or so and driving myself. He did get visitation when I was younger but there's something about me driving myself over there that makes it more meaningful, I don't know. But I do cherish the years that I had with him and I'm thankful. Maybe one day I'll feel like doing random blog therapy about the circumstances of his death; and how his death has affected everyone who knew him. It's a story that maybe could touch someone else. All I care to say at this point is please don't drink & drive; and please don't ride in a car with someone who has been drinking either {that doesn't make you any safer than you driving yourself}. It only takes 1 second and 1 bad choice to change your life forever; your families life; your childrens life; the lives of those other people sharing the road with you... please don't drive under the influence.... ever.
My great-grandma {who practically raised me} died in early January 2006. She was the best "grandma" a little girl could have; stern but loving & cuddly too; my true best friend; she loved people unconditionally and didn't judge others, regardless of their good or bad choices; she was Christian and was so strong in her faith without shoving it down your throat; she led by example, by her actions, not by just talk; she was strong willed but caring; she'd give you the shirt off her back, plus a good meal to go with it just in case you needed it too. She was married for 57 years before my granddaddy passed away from cancer in 1984; they raised 8 kids in a 2 bedroom house that my granddaddy built for her with his own hands. Their kids went on to give them tons of grandkids and great-grandkids and even great-great-grandkids, it's a big family. Although no-one in my family ever had a lot of money, she still found a way to make everyone feel special. She'd make sure everyone had a christmas present... now, it may have been wrapped up in recycled wrapping paper that she'd saved from last year, but it was wrapped atleast! Oh, and with a recycled bow too! :)
She was 95 years old when she passed on and probably healthier than me until she started getting sick... she went downhill pretty quickly after that and for several months didn't know who any of us were. It was a really hard time and I found myself struggling between being a stay-at-home mom to 2 children; a 4 year old & a baby and trying to make quality time to spend with her. Plus trying to accept that she didn't really know who I was at all. It was all so hard. Whew, getting off track here, so all this to say she was so awesome and I miss her soooo much. I miss her being here but I know she's an angel now.
Fast forward to now --> Last month a message board I'm on told everyone about a little lady that she'd met during a nursing home trip to see someone else. This lady is 83 years old and named Mary. She lives in New York. Mary told her how she'd had her own farm and loved living in the country until she had a tractor accident. Her farm was sold (I assume) and she was put in the county nursing home there. She doesn't have any family or friends to visit her. She spends her days looking out her little bitty window in her room reading magazines {the country'er the better}. She misses her old life. How sad...
As I was reading the post about Mary, her story touched my heart and what perfect timing too... honestly if Mary lived closer to me, I'd pick her up and bring her to our little bit of Tennessee country to live with us. :) And my husband thinks it's bad that I bring stray kittens home... what about a cute little old lady?? :) Sorry, had to joke or I'd cry!
So, instead of sitting around here being stuck in the past and sulking about those I miss... I had a mission -- a mission to send Mary a sweet care package. I got the kids in on it too. My 5 year old colored "Ms. Mary" 2 pictures that she very thoughtfully picked from her coloring book. My son helped me pick out some travel size items {lotion, soap, chapstick, socks, handwipes, sanitizer, etc.} and we put in a country living magazine for her to read. We picked out a small furry Valentines bear and I bagged up some yummy Hershey kisses for her to have {we made sure she could have sugar first though!}. I also got her a little flower she could plant in her window, it's self contained and she could just add water. I put in a little note about who we were and that we hoped that she liked the little package -- I hope she doesn't think we're stalking her. :) My message board friend will hopefully get to stop by to visit Ms. Mary soon so hopefully we'll hear that she got it okay.
I hope Ms. Mary liked her care package from some random Tennessee mom as much as we liked getting it all together for her. It made my heart happy to do it for her; the kids enjoyed it and it's so important for me that they give to others, big or small... it just feels good. And Ms. Mary got her package on Feb. 12 {per delivery confirmation}, two days before Valentines Day. :) I'm going to send her another card today just so she continues to get mail.
And now I'm on a mission to find a local Ms. Mary. We have a local county nursing home in the town over that I'm sure someone would love to have visitors, cards or care packages. Maybe you could find a Ms. Mary (or even Mr. Mary (Marvin?)!} in your area. :)

Happy (late) Valentines Day!
I had a great Valentines Day. The kiddos spent the night at the in-laws house. They had a lot of fun and came home with bags of goodies, not kidding either... bags! of goodies! I might have to throw it all out to keep us from eating it (especially the kids!).
DH did good. :) I told him just to make me a card for Valentines... nothing more. He surprised me with a sweet funny card; a Butterfinger; a pack of mini-Cadbury bunny eggs for me & kids to share; and a gift card to Victoria's Secret too. He's a sweetie! He even checked out the Coach bags (my dream bag! even though my Target purses hold up just fine!) at the mall, which I'm sure sent him into near cardiac arrest because they are wayyy crazy expensive {you can't find them on the mall clearance rack I don't think! and they aren't found at his main hangouts of Lowes or Home Depot! ha ha} -- thanks honey, I know you try at all costs to avoid the mall and I'm sure you almost had manly convulsions while browing the oh-so-girly Dillards purse section, even if you didn't purchase anything. :)
DH cooked us dinner at home {calzones, yum!} then we headed off to furniture browse at Havertys. They have some really nice things -- kinda pricey, but hopefully they last a long time. Our Rooms-to-Go couch is on it's last leg & the fuzz is falling out; granted, it's 7 years old though and have made it thru many of my ~couch plopping down~ episodes so I guess it'll be happy to be moved into the man-cave to get away from me, ha ha. I scoped out a living room set named "La Grande" {American made, woohoo!} collection (it's leather, which usually isn't my thing but it's so nice & comfy too). It's a little out of our price range (okay, a lot!) but we'll see, I can dream. We picked out our bedroom furniture from the "Highlands" collection, very pretty! Ohhh, the best part --> laying all over the Temper-Pedic mattresses... awww, they were sooo nice! Our current mattresses are old and beyond flippable, way past their prime I'm afraid. I'd love to have a good, nice mattress that doesn't make my back-ache every morning! Surely I burn some calories though while I'm flipping around all night trying to get comfortable. I've heard good things about the Temper-Pedic, if only the price would be workable is a whole notha story though! ;)
Here's a pic of the bed we like...

and the couch...
We ended our "date" in the Barnes & Noble bookstore. DH found me the Jenny McCarthy book "Mother Warriors" on the sale shelf for $4.98! Regular price was $24.95 when it first came out and he remembered me saying I wanted to get it. I am looking so forward to reading it. I don't have children affected by autism in my family (yet anyways), but do have friends who have children on varying degrees of the spectrum and also have children in the school (where I sub & my kids attend) affected by autism. I think it'll be a good, inspiring read -- and Jenny McCarthy is such a funny girl too!
Oh, and I think I found my dream accent chair too. Very pretty! But I'm thinking that if I could look around hard enough, I could maybe find one like this at the thrift shops -- then I could change the fabric out on it. Here's the idea though... it's the "Yorkshire" accent chair from Haverty's. $499.00 -- ouch!

I hope (if anyone actually reads this!) that you had a great Valentines Day too! :)

My crazy busy week!
This week has been so busy!
Monday & Tuesday were house cleaning days (which I spend sooo much time doing ~ only for it to look like a tornado blew thru 10 minutes later!). I've been trying to declutter and donate things in each room. I figure that will help when it's moving time. What stinks is that I can only declutter/donate a big majority of the kids stuff when they're at school. Don't get me wrong, they love sharing with those who need, they'd give up every toy they had... but it's just the other "special" little knick knacks or "no, that's a collectors item" bubble gum wrapper collection that I need the ultra stealth mode cleaning day for. Hence, the blog name "Tripping Over Toys". My 5 year old daughter even has a string ball that she's started -- and the kids in her class give her the strings off their clothes even! Talk about a hoarder in the making, I may need Dr. Phil in a few years. ha ha I'm attempting to break the cycle now though now! :)
Wednesday was volunteering in K's kindergarten classroom until 1pm. I love her class; I especially love her teacher; she rocks! :) I had gotten talked into donating blood by the kids, so that took up the rest of my day before their school dismissal. I did good; even though I was facing the waiting crowd in the bleachers while donating {meaning I had to NOT pass out and NOT look scared and NOT cry, lol kinda...). Several people waiting for open spots were already looking scared and I didn't want to run them off with me looking nervous -- or worst, passed out! Luckily my blood was on super pump donate mode that day, so it took all off 5 minutes for my little bag to be filled. Yay! I survived, didn't pass out, AND even got a free OJ to drink and a "Buddy Blood Drop" stuffed toy. My kids were proud of me for not embarrasing them with an ambulance call and then they fought over that little Blood Drop Boy all the way home. ;)
Today I volunteered at the school from 8 till 12 to help with Picture Day. It was fun but hectic, I didn't sit down for a minute even. Who knew that herding kids around for picture day was like herding cattle (but without the cool herding dog)? And I wore my new cute shoes that have yet to be "broken in" so my feet feel like they have huge bunions on them now! ha ha :) I would have paid top dollar for some worn out tennis shoes after the first hour! ha ha After that was lunch with C, my 4th grader... that's always interesting b/c he picks a friend to sit with us and their conversations are always so out of my element -- all boy stuff! I was proud that today I acutally knew one of the answers about a Nerf gun, yay, point for me! lol After a quick Kroger run for Valentines party goodies for both K's class & C's class... we got to party hardy, eat tons of yummy treats and most important -- I finally got to sit down! Doesn't take much to please me today, huh? :)
The kids are out of school tomorrow so who knows what we'll get ourselves into. I'm thinking of maybe the local childrens musuem or on a walk if it's nice enough outside. Or better yet, maybe just a simple game here in the living room floor -- low key day! What I am excited about too --> we can sleep in past 6am tomorrow without the blaring alarm clock going off! Woohoo! :)

When I need a laugh...
I have a warped sense of humor but I find this commercial on YouTube just the funniest thing ever -- the dance; the lyrics; the pop-out eyes... we just love it all! I bet he would just the funniest guy to meet. I watch it especially when I need a laugh. :)
Warning: you may find yourself singing this song after watching it more than once though {if you don't know it already!} lol

Whew, it's a new day!
So lastnight wasn't so bad after all. Or maybe it's just that I'm glad it's a new day -- and I've blocked it out already! ha ha The kids (after realizing how bad their costumes really were) decided to go with no costume to the Chick-Fil-a (after both had a crying meltdown about it). They were bummed but that was a good choice -- there wasn't a SINGLE kid in that overpacked place that was dressed up!
And it was soooo crowded there that we got our food and came home. There wasn't a single seat open and like 10 people standing around, holding their food, waiting on a table. So we drove 15+ minutes to get there; stayed 10 minutes max; then drove back home 15+ more minutes (in 21 degree weather) to eat our food. :)
But K did get to meet Snow White while we were there; and Batman (who's costume looked worse than what I'd even came up with at home for C! lol) gave both of the kids a balloon sword/flower combo thing. Of course C's balloon busted as soon as we got home, making him cry and stomp off to his room. Which made K mad; she gets upset when he gets upset -- and vice versa. ;) Lovely!
I didn't even take a picture like I'd meant to... which is probably a good thing considering how many melt-downs there were! Who wants to see pictures of whiney, crying, over dramatic little children? It must be the weather or lack of sleep because we've just all been in this funky weather, freezing cold outside funk. C'mon spring time!

What have I got myself into?
I wished that my mouth had a rewind button sometimes, it would sooo come in handy right now.
I told the kids a few days ago that maybe we'd go to Chick-fil-a tonight for dinner. It's kids night tonight (which = cheap kids meals plus playtime too; wearing the kids out before bed is always a goal! lol). And not only is it just kids night... it's the "2nd annual Princess and Superhero night"! The kids can dress up; eat their food; run around & play like wild-ones; and even get to meet their favorite superheroes. Yay! Can you feel my (lack of ) enthusiam? The kids are all excited, of course they didn't forget what tonight is!
The problem is that I'm just not feeling it... it's way cold outside and getting down to 19 tonight {brrrr!}... I'm crabby today... my house is a mess... it's always so packed there with a room full of parents & kids, hence no where to even sit down sometimes... and to top it off --> my son is freaking out because he doesn't look like the real bonafide Batman. I offered for him to be a princess instead - but he declined. ;)
Grrrrrr.... Now I have to figure out how to make a authentic looking Batman costume out of a half falling apart vampire costume from like 3 years ago. I need to figure out some pointy ears; a mask; the symbol.... ugghhh! I don't have any black face paint and I'm sure writing on your childs face with a fat black Sharpie surely would get DCS called on us {instead of the cheap meal that we're going for!}. lol :)
And I still need to find K a "princess" something to wear. She says that she doesn't have anything to wear either, "everything is too small" -- so she's wanting to wear an Eyptian costume that's like 3 sizes too big, fake gold wrap around the arm snake and all.
Atleast I know about princess stuff and can probably throw something together quickly. The batman costume though, I'm going to have to really work on that one. And I'm just not feeling creative at all.
What was I thinking?!? It would have been so much easier to stay home and cook chicken nuggets & fried in my own kitchen. What started off as a fun night out has turned into "Calgon take me away, pronto, stat, PLEASE!" kinda night.
Please someone tell me that it's Wednesday already!

Welcome to Not Me! Monday! This blog carnival was created by MckMama. You can head over to her blog to read what she and everyone else have not been doing this week.
Fun times, fun times! :)
Let me start by saying that I can cook pretty well. Let me rephrase, I can cook well enough for things to turn out edible and most of time liked enough to eat (well, except when I find my daughter K hanging her head over the trashcan because she doesn't want to swallow it! lol). But I try very hard ~ I put a lot of time into grocery shopping & attempting new recipes to keep it fun. So that makes this week all the more funny to me. It's okay, you can laugh too!
Imagine my hubby's surprise to come home from work to find 3 baseball, rock hard baked potatoes lined up nicely on the stove. Nope, it wasn't a new artsy craft I was attempting. Yep, that was to be my lunch! Well, not all 3... but I overcooked them -- not once, not twice -- but THREE separate times! I am the "Microwave Queen" so surely I know that you only cook one potato for 5 minutes. So I would never ever cook one for 15 minutes, the next for 12 minutes, then in tears & near starvation... cook the last one for 11 minutes, praying it would turn out. I would know that it was wayyyy too long -- especially after the 1st one! I mean, I know everything there is to know about cooking -- I'd never make baseballs on purpose! And I'd especially not leave them out lined up so fancy so me & the hubby could joke on my microwave skills later. Nope, not me!
I'd never do the above hilarious thing only to give up after the 3rd attempt turned also into a baseball... and scream "Ugggghhh....forget it!" outloud to myself and pick up Taco Bell on the way to pick up the kiddos from school. Definitely not me!
Another thing that I would never not do in my small little kitchen is burn the copper bottoms straight off my cooking pots! I *always* pay attention to which burner I turn on (I'd never cut on the wrong one, only to have kids fighting in the other room yelling for a referree{mom!!!}); and I always pay attention to how long something was cooked (like the water that somehow mysteriously disappeared, leaving an empty pot to heat up on high!). Again, I am a good cook ~ and I always pay the utmost attention to what I've got going on. I'm all about multi-tasking. I've had these same pots & pans forever -- so I wouldn't burn the bottoms off and embarrass myself like that TWO times. Never, not me!
I did not get on to my kids yesterday for playing in the mud/icky water while DH & I talk about what all needs to be ordered for this week at the new house. I would never tell the kids to go out and play because we've got talking to do. I'm the perfect mom after all, right? So, I wasn't surprised when little K came up to me (with mud from head to toe) asking to wash her hands (and she was worried about her hands?!?). No, she wasn't in her cute black Mary Jane shoes that I ohhh so love either... I always make sure she has on her play shoes because she's already ruined like 5 pairs down there playing in the messy sand pile. And my good boy C made sure to stay away because he didn't know what excuse to make up for all the mess they had all over them, instead he just continued to play in it while his little 5 year old sister got in trouble for the both of them. So imagine my surprise when after I did not question her as to what they were thinking (!) -- she so sweetly (while looking like a total mud monster) turned around and said, "but momma, you said that you made mud pies when you were little too." Okay, so she's cute & sweet... but I did not have to turn my head from laughing because she was soooo right.
I did not got excited one my rare shopping excursion last week about finding a *really cute* kids continent shower curtain at Ross -- for $5.99! Yep, now they could learn about continents & pee pee at the same time, hooray!! I'm a dork, I admit it. Anyway, I quickly hung it up that night in their bathroom --> it sooo needed a makeover and I couldn't wait for the kids to say how cute it was! Only to almost kill us all with the overly strong, way nasty plastic fumes. Yuck! Blah! We needed respirators stat!! It was honestly terrible and I almost ripped it down and threw it out on the backporch until it didn't smell so bad. The kids couldn't use their bathroom for 2 days and the cute continent shower curtain was a BIG fat flop! So, instead of getting good mommy praises I did not end up getting laughed at from the hubby. Sometimes you've just gotta laugh! :)
I am not sitting here for the second day in a row with sweat pants on & frizzy, frazzled hair. I do care about looking my best, I'd never do that. Of course I did my laundry lastnight because I had put it off long enough already. I wouldn't procrastinate further, nope not me!
I did not look in the mirror this morning on the way to take the kids to school and think of how it looks like I rolled straight out from under a rock. And how I hoped that no-one else noticed it. Nope, not me... I'm wayyy cuter than that! ha ha :)

I'm wayyy cuter than that! ha ha :)
